Deadline Hollywood has revealed that the gifted comedic actor Jonah Hill (Superbad, Get Him To The Greek) is currently in talks to continue his foray into the production side of filmmaking by directing the black-listed screenplay The Kitchen Sink, written by first-time feature film writer Oren Uziel.
This news follows the announcement that Hill is currently co-writing and producing the film adaptation of 21 Jump Street, the 80s television series that shot Johnny Depp to stardom. Admittedly, having not been around for the original run of series, I had little interest in a film adaptation until I heard Hill was involved. It seems Sony shares my faith in Hill’s creative abilities and has given him his first real gig behind the scenes.
The Kitchen Sink is an action-drama about a High School student who, in the midst of an alien invasion, must join forces with vampires and zombies to do battle with the fiendish spacemen. The ironic title is a self referential gag on how the film is essentially a mish-mash of everything but The Kitchen Sink.
It’s interesting that Hill’s first venture into directing is not a straight-up comedy, as the man has impeccable timing. Still, this sounds like a wonderfully goofy concept that hopefully manages to deliver some smart scares without taking itself too seriously. If it can manage that, this could easily be a 21st-century Monster Squad.
The Kitchen Sink is being produced by ex-Sony chief and The Amazing Spiderman producer Matt Tolmach. Here’s hoping it will be The Breakfast Club meets Interview with a Vampire meets Evil Dead meets Aliens, and not She’s All That meets Twilight meets House of the Dead meets Skyline. *Shudder*
