As predicted, the critically panned action film Battle: Los Angeles took out the top spot, earning just over $2.5 million over the weekend, while Bradley Cooper’s Limitless still opened well (although in third spot) with $1.9 million. Johnny Depp animation Rango has held strong in its second week, sandwiched in between the new Hollywood releases. Locally, Griff The Invisible, The Reef and A Heartbeat Away opened to miniscule results.
The best results from this week’s new releases should come from Jason Statham’s latest offering The Mechanic, a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film, and Amanda Seyfried’s Red Riding Hood, the teen-tageted retelling of the classic fairytale by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. Opening in limited release is damning education doco Waiting For Superman, the Paul Giametti drama Barney’s Version and the Oscar-nominated Spanish drama Biutiful. No Australian releases this week.
