Out of the three openers this week in Charlie St. Cloud, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, none could topple Despicable Me amidst a school holiday weekend, which took $2.2m in its third week. Wall Street: MNS had to settle for second and a mediocre opening of $1.7m, but over in the States it managed to grab top position over fellow opener Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga’Hoole, the Australian-made animation to reach our screens this Thursday.
The only local film in the top-10, Tomorrow When The War Began passed the $10m mark over the weekend, making it within reach of the top-20 highest grossing Aussie films of all time. It will be joined by Legend of the Guardians but Steve Carell’s Dinner for Schmucks could strongly challenge the animations and kid-friendly films currently dominating.
