The nominations for the 81st Academy Awards are finally in, and  boy are there some surprises! The Dark Knight and Revolutionary Road get shafted from deserving categories, but included in surprising ones. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button takes in the most nominations at 13, but can it outshine Golden (Globes) boy Slumdog Millionaire?

Here are some quick observations:

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button might have been snubbed at the Globes, but the Academy have given David Fincher’s film an impressive 13 nominations. Slumdog Millionaire, the clear victor at the globes, has 10 nominations whilst The Dark Knight and Milk have 8 apiece.

- Despite 8 nominations predominantly related to production, The Dark Knight does not pick up a nomination for adapted screenplay nor Christopher Nolan’s direction. Call me unimpressed.  Thankfully, Heath Ledger did manage to get a nomination for best supporting actor.

- Neither Kate Winslet or Leonardo DiCaprio received a nomination for their superb performances in Revolutionary Road. However, Winselt’s performance in The Reader is still in the running for best actress.

- Pleasant surprise in seeing Richard Jenkin’s nominated for best actor in The Visitor, Michael Shannon for best supporting actor in Revolutionary Road and Melissa Leo for best actress in Frozen River. However, I doubt they will win in such fiercely contested categories that have clear favourites.

- Bruce Springsteen may have won best original song over at the Globes for “The Wrester”, but here he doesn’t even get a nomination, whilst Slumdog Millionaire has two in the running. What’s up with that?

- Whilst I’m glad to see Australia get a nomination in Costume Design, its continual omission from Cinematography nominations still disappoints me.

- It’s nice to see underdogs  In Bruges, Happy go Lucky and Frozen River in the best original screenplay category. Hopefully In Bruges will take it.
