Last month was a biggie for Cut Print Review. From film festivals to new contributors to a radically different background (instead of grey, it’s now BLUE!!!); so much has happened I feel the need to give a bit of an update. So read onward for just that!

New Authors

I’ve always wanted Cut Print Review to be a regularly updated film blog that offers a diverse range of opinions. Recently, we’ve began to realise both goals when bringing on board a bunch of new contributors. First came Melbourne’s own Reb Meryl, sharing her extensive knowledge of classic cinema in her fantastic first feature article The 10 Most Unconventional Movie Couples. My role as Film Editor for On Dit student magazine at the University of Adelaide helped me get into contact with likeminded movie buffs from University, which is how Angus Crisholm and Thomas Glaister came to contribute their great reviews. Steph Lyall, a dear friend of mine who outshone me in English Studies back in high school, has also graced the site with her writing talent in her article on Short Film Festivals.

Most recently, Ivy Fuld kindly offered to help out with film news and other musings. Her first article, Between the Aisles, takes a grand look at what’s rumoured and what’s in development in Hollywood. Ivy’s enthusiasm for film and her extensive knowledge in the happening of the industry is tremendous; I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say we’re really excited to have her on board! Until her next contribution, make sure you check out Ivy’s own rad blog Do You Have a Flag?

Of course, I cannot talk about our contributors without mentioning Katina and Elise, who have helped make Cut Print Review the site it is today. Katina, who joined the team last October, has since contributed over 20 fantastic reviews to the site as well as her interesting feature article series entitled It’s Relevant. Elise, who began her blogging career with us in December, has since provided us with a range of articles; from film news and red carpet reports to theatre and film reviews. A BIG thank you to Elise and Katina, as well as all our contributors, who do this all for nothing but the love of cinema. You guys rock!

A huge thank you goes out to Blake of Bitchin Film Reviews and Ivy of Do you have a Flag? (and now here!) who both ever so kindly awarded Cut Print Review a Dardo award.

“The Dardo Award is given for cultural, literary and personal values in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing appreciation and gratitude for work that adds value to the web.

I’m truly humbled by this award; it really means a lot to know there a people out there who take the time to read the jargon that I write, and actually manage to enjoy it! As a blogger, you can’t ask for much more than that.

In accepting the award, which I most thankfully do, I’m required to do two things:

1. Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that granted the award and a link to his/her blog.

2. Pass the award to another five blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgment, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.

Ironically, the two bloggers who gave me the award are the two I would have first considered when giving the award. However, there are many other great blogs out there who deserve the award just as much. Listed below are five blogs I frequent for their fantastic prose and interesting insight. I see my passion for cinema mirrored in the writings of each contributor of these blogs, and that’s what keeps me coming back!

Sam Juliano and Allan Fish of Wonders In The Dark

WendyMoon of Movie Viewing Girl

Scott Mendelson of Mendelson’s Memos

Craig of The Movie Banter

Film Dr. of The Film Doctor

Thanks to these blogs for all your fantastic musings; I think the Dardo award is a great way of showing one bloggers appreciation to another and I hope you all pass it on.

Bigpond Adelaide Film Festival 2009

From February 17th to March 1st our team of reviewers attended the 2009 Bigpond Adelaide Film Festival. I myself saw 11 films in as many days, on top of being a volunteer at the festival.  Being able to see a range of international films that I would otherwise never be given the chance to see was fantastic, and I was simply blown away by the quality cinema that exists beyond the hills of Hollywood. This is evident from the fact that only two films from the festival, Gomorrah and Three Monkeys, were not met with enthusiasm by our reviewers. In fact, of the 11 films I saw, I only walked out of one of them disappointed (being Gomorrah). For a bitter critic like me, that’s almost unheard of!

All our reviews and articles from the festival can be found here.

Being a biannual event, the next festival takes place in 2011, which no Adelaideian should dare to miss!
