The 2009 British Academy Film Awards has just wrapped up in London, and the winners list looks a lot like that of the Golden Globe Awards that took place last month.
Slumdog Millionaire continues to be top dog this awards season, taking home 7 golden mask trophys including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Mickey Rourke and Kate Winslet continue to take the Best Male and Female lead awards for their performances in The Wrestler and The Reader respectively. Whilst Winslet might have won Best Supporting Actress at the Globes for Revolutionary Road, the British Academy left her without a nomination, leaving Penelope Cruz to gain a BAFTA nod for her performance in Vicky Christina Barcelona. It came as no surprise to see Heath ledger once again win Best Supporting Actor, yet it was the only win for The Dark Knight despite 9 nominations.
Despite being snubbed at the Globes, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won big in the production categories, winning Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hair and Best Production Design. However, Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon headed home empty handed once again as did Gus Van Sant’s biopic Milk, which had 4 nominations.
A surprise win came from within the Best British Film category, with the documentary Man on Wire being favoured over the likes of Mamma Mia! and In Bruges. However, Martin McDonagh terrific screenplay for In Bruges did manage to win out in the Best Original Screenplay category.
