WTF: Goodbye Sally Menke

WTF: Goodbye Sally Menke

Quentin Tarantino loses his friend and editor

[WTF is a weekly opinion article in which Amy Killin shines the spotlight on something peculiar or shocking in the world of film and gives you, the reader, a chance to chime in with your two cents.]

Sad news in the week just passed, as film fans with an interest in the behind the scenes of moviemaking were shocked with the news of genius editor Sally Menke’s sudden death.  In light of this, the Internet was ablaze with obituaries and career retrospectives for the editor, including this fantastic one from the Guardian.

As Quentin Tarantino’s right hand woman and faithful collaborator on all of his projects from Reservoir Dogs to last year’s Inglourious Basterds, Sally’s editing skills and attention to detail provided the original shape needed to sculpt the ideas of cinema’s favourite madman. The Academy tipped its hat to Sally’s work with Oscar nominations for best editing for Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds, and she truly was the career pinnacle for many aspiring editors to look up to. Her professional relationship with Tarantino produced some of the most highly regarded cinema of the last two decades – their partnership grew to find that rare ebb and flow between two magnetic people, striking the right balance of creativity, wit and balls to become what can only be considered genius.

Now I know, my anxiety is not exclusive to me… losing one of the most talented editors who ever lived is more than just a shock; The WTF factor here lies in regrettably looking back on Sally’s finest professional moments and knowing there will be no more. Enjoy her handiwork – check out

My Question to you is this:

Is there any validity in the fear of Tarantino never making another movie again? And if he does, do you think Sally’s absence will be felt?

One thing is certain, I really feel for the person who tries to fill Sally’s shoes…
