Hollywood’s biggest stars were out to shine tonight as the 66th Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in true style!
Predictions have been noticeably diverse leading up to the big night, a telling sign that the competition was the fiercest it has been in years. For audiences, the Globes serve as a fantastic reminder of the impressive year 2008 has been for cinema.
Easily the biggest winner of the night was Slumdog Millionaire; taking home Best Drama, Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and Best Original Score (A.R Rahman).
Kate Winslet was also a Globe trotter as she outshone all her female colleges by taking home both Best Actress in a Drama (Revolutionary Road) and Best Supporting Actress (The Reader).
Mickey Rourke struck gold with his performance in The Wrester, walking out with the highly contested Best Actor in a Drama Globe, giving Darren Aronofsky’s film it’s second award after it won Best original song (Bruce Spingsteen) earlier in the night.
As predicted by many, Heath Ledger was awarded a posthumous Golden Globe for his stand out performance in The Dark Knight, coincidently the only category the film was nominated in.
Surprise wins came from the ‘Comedy and Musical’ category; Colin Farrell (In Bruges) being favoured as Best Actor over Javier Badem (Vicky Christina Barcelona) and James Franco (Pineapple Express) and Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky) awarded Best Actress ahead of Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia!) and Frances McDormand (Burn After Reading).
Surprise loses also ensured; Leaving the ceremony completely empty handed was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon, despite being nominated in five categories each.
