When a skateboarder does a 180, they spin themselves so they’ve switched sides. That’s clearly the aim of the Greek film industry, which is on the rise as each Greek Film Festival in Australia gains better attendances. 2010 was no exception as films on offer included local smash Nisos, war drama Heart and Soul and 180 Degrees, a tale of how a simple half-spin can turn someone’s life completely upside [...]

So you’ve awoken to some distressing news – it’s the zombie apocalypse. The people on the telly are urging you lock your doors and steer clear of individuals with chunks of their head missing, as if they’re the kind of folk you’d usually invite in for tea and biscuits. To make matters worse, your once-lovely girlfriend has just tried to eat your face, which might have been a [...]

The after-life and film have always been dangerous bedfellows.  There have been successes (The Sixth Sense, The Others) but also disappointments (The Lovely Bones, After.Life). Sadly, Zac Efron’s latest star vehicle Charlie St. Cloud, joins the list of the damned.

Charlie St. Cloud (Zac Efron) and his young admiring brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) are left to their own devices as single mother Claire (Kim Basinger, the ‘Where’s [...]

The first year of the new millennium, 2001, sure gave moviegoers a number of reasons to smile: the release of the first Harry Potter, the first Lord of the Rings, the first Ocean’s Eleven remake and the first Shrek. These entertaining films established the beginnings of many beloved (and some not so beloved) sequels bestowed upon us between then and now. Another franchise waiting to happen in 2001 [...]

When Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, one of the film’s stars, Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), reportedly walked out of the cinema half way through the screening. But who can blame her? This grim look into the psyche of a serial killer is so brutally violent and sadist in parts, its borderline torture porn. As far as crime thrillers go, it’s also quite a bore.

This lazily plotted and performed political snoozer has to be one of the most disappointing films I’ve seen all year. The premise, adapted from Robert Harris’s novel The Ghost, seems ripe with tension and mystique, but as the film so blatantly purports via its plodding paint-by-the-numbers narrative, not everything is as it seems.

But while I left the cinema feeling as though I deserved a t-shirt that reads ‘I survived the Eclipse’, Twilight devotes were beaming from ear to ear as though they’ve just spent the last 130 minutes riding a Unicorn across a rainbow made of pure, unadulterated happiness. It’s “the best yet!” apparently. Perhaps it is. But that’s like saying ‘A’ is the best form of hepatitis.
