Not counting Idiocracy, Extract is the first movie directed by Mike Judge since Office Space in ’99. Now the question is, do people still care about Mike Judge? Was he just a one hit wonder? Extract appears to follow Office Space like constraints, placing the lead character played by Jason Bateman in an office of sorts, coming to terms with life’s dead ends, and falling in “like” with an attractive inferior, played by Mila Kunis. Most importantly Kristen “shes in everything” Wiig and Ben “I’m not a leading man anymore” Affleck, are in it. Super.

Cherrybomb Trailer

The biggest story has to be the freakin X-Men Origins leak. It seems no one can escape the horrible travesty that is this unplanned early release. And silly me, here I was thinking the earthquake in Italy was big news. But seriously, for all the hard work, time, and money that goes into making a big budget film, I feel their pain. It must really blow to have a thousands of people see an unfinished product, most of whom will likely now opt not to go out and spend $10.75 to watch the slightly altered version on the big screen. But don’t be like that, ok?

Anne Hathaway has officially been cast in the upcoming biopic, Get Happy, based on the Gerald Clarke biography of the same name. To many this casting choice comes as no surprise. Given Hathaway’s current popularity boost after her successful turn starring in Rachel Getting Married, and her striking resemblance to Garland, it seems this movie was fated. So now the question is, will this be her Oscar winner? Of course it’s too early to say, but never too early to speculate. Without a screenwriter or director on board yet, people are free to let their imaginations run wild with possibilities. One thing is for certain, Garland’s real life will give Hathaway plenty of drama to work with.

Ponyo Swims to America

So Edward Cullen aka Robert Pattinson (or Spunk Ransom as he prefers) is sticking it out with Summit and reportedly signing on for Memoirs, a tale of two young “lovers” (I hate that word) who can’t get it together in view of family tragedies. I was kind of hoping for his next trick, Pattinson would do an 180 and play, oh I don’t know, something other than a brooding tragic romantic lead, but whatev’s… it’s what the fans want. And of course, we don’t actually know what kind of character he’ll be playing yet, but I think it’s safe to assume that Summit is doing their best to use his ever increasing audience of rabid female fans to their advantage. I think the bigger question is, who will he be playing opposite?

Maybe you couldn’t believe it, but it’s true… Michael Sheen is set to played famed British Prime Minister Tony Blair now for the third time. Despite no American nominations for this role, Sheen has still gained incredible notoriety for taking on the role of Blair, first in the TV film, The Deal, and then in The Queen, playing opposite Helen Mirren. Now the man must feel that twice is simply not enough to play this character that frankly, he does play to perfection. He joins Dennis Quaid and Julianne Moore (who teamed up for the amazing Far From Heaven), who’ll play infamous husband and wife, Bill and Hillary Clinton, in the film The Special Relationship. Recently, Quaid played a president in the film, American Dreamz, and it was all too obvious that he sought inspiration for his character from former President Bush. I have no doubt that he and Moore will take on this public couple perfectly. Seems like it could be the perfect cast, but I guess we’ll see….

Butterflies and Slumdogs… it’s a perfect match

Awhile back, I mentioned that Pinto would be joining up with Woody Allen on his next picture, and now she has also signed up with Diving Bell director, Julian Schnabel for his film Miral. The film will chronicle real-life woman Hind Husseini’s effort to establish an orphanage in Jerusalem after the partition of Palestine in 1948 and the creation of the state of Israel. Schnabel’s screenplay is based on Rula Jebreal’s original book.

Looks like Pinto, who is now known worldwide has decided to use her fame for good and not evil, like playing the hot girl in American Pie 14… it could have happened! But she’s too smart for that.

After the release of the trailer, the poster is now out for Mendes’ Away We Go, and it seems the look of indie kids graffiti notebooks is in. Taking a queue from Juno (how can you forget those cutesy opening credits?), Away We Go uses little colored line drawings to draw you in. You like?

New Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince posters have arrived, and aren’t they just dapper? Go here for the full gallery. Malfoy looks like he’s gotten increasingly… metrosexual. Hermione looks like she might be hiding a “delicate” condition. Harry looks like he smells something funny… maybe it’s that old milk underneath the invisibility cloak. Ron looks kind of proud and badass (for once). Dumbledore looks seductive. And Snape just looks like Alan Rickman.

Say it ain’t so, Sean Penn as Larry

I know there’s a lot of excited people out there for this trio to team up for The 3 Stooges movie, but I can’t help but feel a little disturbed (casting is not official yet except for Penn). This isn’t to say that the Farrelly brothers adaptation won’t do well, and I am all for being pleasantly surprised, but I just think that serious disaster potential sprawled all over it. More than Penn and Carrey though, who I do have faith in, these Benicio del Toro rumors are just perplexing. The man looks like a ghost cowboy on heroin… oh, I guess that is kind of funny.

Awhile back I mentioned some casting details on the upcoming romantic comedy, Leap Year, starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode. Now, the hilarious Adam Scott has joined up, and although his role hasn’t officially been announced, he MUST be the boyfriend Adams chases through Europe. And honestly, how perfect is that casting? It’s perfect.

The Green Lantern movie (not to be confused with the Green Hornet), is set to start filming mid-September, and has a release date of December 17, 2010. Director Martin Campbell is going to have a lot of anxious fans knocking down his door for casting details, so he best get on that… quick.

Eisenberg Kills Your Darlings

Upcoming star of Adventureland, and current fav, Jesse Eisenberg has now been added to the cast roster for Kill Your Darlings, where he’ll be playing famed poet, Allen Ginsberg. Kill Your Darlings will follow a murder, and how it triggered the “beat” generation.Chris Evans (Sunshine, Fantastic Four) will star as Jack Kerouac, and Ben Whishaw (Perfume, Brideshead Revisited) will play Lucien Carr, the Columbia student who brings them all together, and is charged for the murder. With all the Ginsbergs and Kerouacs flying around, “beat” seems to be back. I never thought I’d say that.

Franco Gets Into Character

Ginsburg appears to be popular these days! Now on top of the news about Kill Your Darlings, we have the first images of James Franco also playing Allen Ginsberg in the upcoming Howl. The film will follow the obscenity trial of Ginsberg after his most famous poem, Howl, was published. They have an all star cast aboard (Paul Rudd, Mary Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, Alan Alda and more), so Howl looks like it has a shot at greatness, but we won’t know till 2010. Franco’s look will differ greatly from Eisenberg’s I’m sure.

David The Director

David Hayter couldn’t get you to see his movie when he wrote it, so now he’ll take a stab at it from the Director’s seat. Hayter, writer of the Watchmen script, and the first 2 X-Men movies, is forming a company called “Dark Hero Studios” with producer Benedict Carver, where they’ll work on projects in the action, sci-fi and horror genres. The duo’s first project will be a werewolf thriller called Slaughter’s Road (bad title). Thomas Dekker (John Connor in TSCC) is in talks to star. Sounds like either all the pieces will finally fall into place for Hayter, or it’ll be giant tornado of wrong for the guy.

The sudden loss of the beautiful and talented Natasha Richardson will have an enormous impact on the film community. The Film Experience gives a good summary on her career and family. She will always be remembered for exuding incredible warmth and natural beauty onscreen, and I, for one, am really going to miss her.

First Look At Tim Burton’s Upcoming Alice in Wonderland

We now have an early look at Tim Burton’s highly anticipated, Alice in Wonderland. I can say, full of enthusiam, that I think even from this first very first early look that visionary Burton seems to be heading in the right direction. Alice herself, played by Mia Wasikowska, looks like she’ll fit the part perfectly, combining childlike demure with Burton’s favored “porcelain skin” look.

Possible ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ plot details revealed!

When the lights dim we meet distraught, jilted Leonard (Phoenix), now living with his loving, compassionate parents in their Brooklyn apartment, and working for his father’s dry cleaning business. Our introduction to him is leaden to say the least (I don’t want to give much away), but it makes for an impacting opening sequence. One of the bigger problems with the film was actually the transition from this turbulent beginning (leading you down a certain road of expectation) into a lighter, comical side of Leonard. He’s slightly schizophrenic, bouncing between exuberant, energetic charm and nervous, depressed tension. While this doesn’t necessarily fit with his character, it is in keeping with Phoenix himself. Through much of the film you are treated to Leonard’s constant mumbling and gum chewing, which all feel eerily familiar if you’ve seen the Letterman interview. These Leonard vs. Phoenix overlaps in character distracted me at first, but once the film got rolling, I was able to forget about Phoenix and focus on the pure, humble story at hand.

At the moment he needs it most, Leonard meets a woman, two actually. Sandra, played by Vinessa Shaw (you might remember her from Ladybugs way back in the day) is sweet, sincere and very down to earth. She and Leonard are introduced by their parents at a dinner party, and her attraction to him is immediate, bordering on forward. From their first meeting it’s clear that they have a chemistry, but he isn’t stunned by her presence, and treats her from the start like an alternate player with potential. Shaw really stuck with me in this part. She is one of the highlights of the film, standing back as the demure brunette, shyly beautiful with sunken eyes (enhanced by make-up), and eagerly waiting for Leonard to make a move. Her quiet calming presence mirror’s Leonard’s mother (excellently played by Isabella Rossellini). She is there for him, to understand and to wait patiently for his affection. At no point do we see them fight or argue, all she wants is to take care of him. Shaw, who has a history of playing cinematic vixens in the past, shows her ability to do more than just flaunt what’s on the surface.

The antithesis to Shaw’s Sandra, is the bubbly blonde Michelle, played by former Hollywood Princess Gwyneth Paltrow. Leonard and Michelle meet as she hides out from her angry boyfriend. Tall, beautiful and damaged, Leonard falls for Michelle without hesitancy, instantly star struck. As she’s busy rambling on about her ADHD, he’s busy worshipping the ground she treads and planning their future. This clearly is a girl who’s been inundated with male attention all her life, and has no qualms with encouraging the infatuation. When they part ways, any thoughts of Sandra still lingering in his mind have disappeared and been replaced with fantasies of unattainable Michelle. Paltrow, who’s been noticeably absent from films since starting her family, returns to the big screen in Two Lovers ready to work, but a little out of practice. Granted her character is supposed to be a disaster, between her involvement with her married boss and frequent drug habit, but Paltrow still played her with less subtly that she could have. Despite the heavy handed performance, Paltrow remains as mesmerising as ever on screen. She’s played the manipulative blonde gazelle before in Great Expectations, but this time instead of being unshakably cool, she’s pathetically naive and desperate, haplessly dragging others down with her.

Leonard begins to move forward with both women, much to the dismay of his parents who clearly favor Jewish family friend Sandra. He goes after Michelle in friendship, being that’s all he’s allowed, and wills it to be more by showing up at opportune moments and always making himself available. He and Sandra begin a tentative romance, only pushed forward by her deep crush. Leonard doesn’t push her away, but he can’t fully commit either. Neither woman knows of the other’s existence, and as the movie progresses both come to depend and put their faith in a torn Leonard. The film takes on a surprisingly thriller quality due to pacing, music, lighting and of course acting. You never quite know if things are as simple as they seem or if suddenly someone will turn up dead. For a romantic drama, it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, very reminiscent of Woody Allen’s Match Point. Overall the cinematography is a little all over the place. Sometimes you feel like you’re watching an arsty indie drama, and other times a mainstream romantic comedy. But there are some really lovely shots, especially in the scenes of Paltrow and Phoenix on the roof. I get the feeling that James Gray had a lot of ideas in his head for the look and feel of the film, and that sometimes he got his wires crossed a little. However it all really does come together in the end. The plot, the acting, the look all fits well enough, that instead of leaving the theatre thinking more about the technical issues I would have changed, all I could think about were the characters and how much I wanted to know more about them. I loved the story and how well it showed all our idiosyncratic behaviors in times of attraction. Most people have had feelings for someone that didn’t return them or maybe even led someone on because it felt good to be appreciated, and Two Lovers really takes the time to show how humorous, sad, or even ridiculous these interactions can be.

Verdict

While there are some inconsistencies both in technical aspects and characterization, Two Lovers really takes hold of you from the very beginning and keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. Joaquin Phoenix shows us the beginnings of his now infamous break down, and leaves us with what will be a memorable last performance (if it is indeed his last). Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw are wonderful female counterparts, aptly playing the roles of “angel” and “devil” to Phoenix’s lost soul. The film ultimately falls more into the indie drama category, and leaves the audience with a lot to ponder about human interaction, and how one goes from here to a rapping career.

I Love You Man’s Premature Marketing?

As much as I’m looking forward to the barrage of bromantical comedy that’s sure to come from I Love You, Man, isn’t it a little early to be touting posters with quotes that we have no idea what they mean yet? Sure they sound kind of funny, and they’re likely to be very funny, but how would I know? I haven’t seen the movie! Nonetheless I now have the phrase “Totes Magotes” stuck in my head. So, do these posters intrigue you enough to make you want to see the flick more, or do they come off as as little too self confident in the film’s “catch phrase” status and make you want to hang back?

What we can Expect from TOKYO! and Other Upcoming Japanese Films

Beyond his recent news headlines as the new director slated to take over The Green Hornet, Michel Gondry is also one of the three directors to contribute to TOKYO!, a triptych of stories set in the overwhelming megalopolis that is Tokyo. I think a quote from the TOKYO! website says it best. “Tokyo! addresses the timeless question of whether we shape cities, or if cities shape us – in the process revealing the rich humanity at the heart of modern life.” If you watch the trailer below, you’ll see how imaginative, drastically far apart, and yet surprisingly similar these three stories are. Directors Leos Carax, Joon-ho Bong and Michel Gondry each look like they spent some serious think-tank time before ultimately deciding on what short story they would like to tell, and after all of that it is in no way surprising that Gondry would choose to portray a lazy woman turning into a chair. From what I gather Carax’s piece will follow a sewer monster man making his way through the city, and Bong’s piece will express a man’s humble life within the confines of his apartment. I’m very excited to see what TOKYO! can do. Go here for the trailer.

Tokyo Sonata is set to follow a contemporary Japanese family of four. From the outset the family appears to be normal with a husband, wife and two sons, but then the slow unraveling begins when the father unexpectedly loses his job. Unwilling to bring this burden onto his family, he becomes part of the secretly unemployed workforce. While his family thinks he’s trotting off to work, in fact he is spending his days sitting in libraries and walking through parks. Parallel to the father, The younger son, Kenji is forbidden by his mother to take piano lessons, but manages to take them anyway using his lunch money to pay. Like father, like son. Coming from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, a Japanese director known for his thriller and suspense films, is said to bring his sense of tension and fear into this quietly paced suburban Japan nightmare. But what do I know, I haven’t seen it yet. Mike Harvey from Nylon magazine called it, “Odd, austere, wry, subtle, explosive, poignant, and gorgeous.” It sounds to me like we have a beautifully composed, subtly acted, work of art that no one will see on our hands. I’m actually dying to see it, on a hunch that it will be wonderful, and I only hope I get the chance before it hits DVD status. It will start running a limited release in the U.S. on March 13th.

If you watch the trailer, then you’ll understand why I don’t know yet what to make of Big Man Japan. The plot is said to follow an approx. 40 year old man who lives in a run down house in Tokyo, alone. Sounds normal so far. He periodically transforms into a giant as tall as skyscrapers, and defends Japan from similarly giant monsters. I’m sorry what??? I mean I’m intrigued, but what? From reviews already in, it’s said to be pretty funny with an obvious absurdity that just makes you love it. It’s unlikely to ever come to a theater near you, but just in case it’s said to start running a limited release in the U.S. in mid May. The giants, monsters, and baby (?) are all done in CG, but in such a way that you understand the creator wants you to know it’s digital. I can’t even begin to imagine what was running through creator Hitoshi Matsumoto’s mind while creating Big Man Japan. Probably something along the lines of, “this is going to rock everyone’s socks, Japan style.” Even just from the trailer, I’m inclined to agree.

Dakota Fanning to Play 15 Year Old Punk Rocker

Floria Sigismondi’s upcoming biopic about 70′s all girl rocker group, The Runaways, now has precocious Dakota Fanning aboard. Fanning is set to play 15 year old Cherie Currie who became best known for her over-sexualized and drug abuse look beginning at a young age. The home schooled starlet first came on the map as the adorable daughter to Sean Penn in I AM SAM, and has since taken off in ways even I couldn’t have forseen. Now she’s 15, and all grown up… maybe even a little too fast. We can expect that this is just phase one of Fanning’s “prove to Hollywood I’m a real actress” plan. Next thing you know she’ll be doing a movie with a rape scene…. oh wait. Fanning will be co-starring in The Runaways with Kristen Stewart, who’ll star as Joan Jett. There continue to be rumors that Fanning and Stewart will team up again in New Moon of the Twilight Saga with Fanning taking on the role of young vampire Jane, but nothing is yet confirmed.

Terminator Salvation - I have to say this trailer got me a lot more excited than the first one. I love the idea of the robots becoming so advanced, they don’t even know they’re not human anymore. Brilliant, even though it’s been done before. Anyone wanna guess what the now infamous freak out scene was?

Public Enemies - Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard will hit theaters July 1, guns blazing in Michael Mann’sPublic Enemies. Other stars include Billy Crudup (J. Edgar Hoover?), Channing Tatum, Leelee Sobieski, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, and Stephen Dorff, plus like 20 more. So are we ready for another gangster movie? Are we ready to see Johnny Depp play something other than a pirate? Are we ready to move on from the Christian Bale incident? Hell if I know.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - After the insane success of the full Terminator: Salvation trailer released earlier this week, we now have the full X-Men Origins trailer at our disposal. I have to admit, I was diggin the teaser a lot more. Or maybe I’m still so hyped from how amazing Salvation looked, that this just fell short by comparison. What do y’all think? The Hangover – What the hell happened last night? The Hangover Teaser premiered that’s what. Set to release June 5, 2009, The Hangover will follow three groomsmen (Zach Galifinakis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms) on retracing their steps to find their buddy the groom. Think 3 Men and a Baby, but set in Vegas and presumably with a lot more cursing (and hopefully humor). Because it’s directed by the guy who did the Starsky and Hutch movie, I’m keeping my expectations at an all time low. However, because Zach G. is in it, they are simultaneously exponentially high. It’s got a decent premise and funny people. Lets hope that’s all they need. Check out the teaser trailer here.

500 Days of Summer - You’ve waited for it, and now here it is, the full trailer for 500 Days of Summer. Even though the new trailer gives a lot more insight into the movie and what it’ll be like, I’m still fond of the original teaser. Something about the guy’s constant narration stuck with me. Jeez Zooey, The Smiths? That was an easy one. Watch the new full trailer here.

Wild Times With Spike Jonze

I’ve been meaning to get to writing about Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are for a couple of weeks now, but with all the insane movie news, and time spent working on a couple of reviews, it fell by the wayside temporarily. The film will be based on the 10 sentence long children’s book by Maurice Sendak and combine a mix of live action people, CGI, and Jim Henson styled creatures voiced by famous people like Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, and Forest Whitaker. For the last few years the movie has had it’s fair share of problems including switching studios, and rumors of total reshoots. But now the film is finally in post production and currently has a release date of October 16, 2009. I was fairly nervous when I heard about the live action adaptation given it’s iconic imagery and potential under the wrong director to lean entirely towards your cliche hollywood kids movie. But, HAVE YOU SEEN THESE PICS?! They’re gorgeous! Once Spike Jonze came on board, it’s really no surprise that I instantly began to feel an affinity for the project. He’s brought cinematographer Lance Acord to the film, the man responsible for Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Need I say more? So far, the imagery reminds me a lot of the music video for Sigur Ros’ Glosoli. The film is going to be amazing. I’ve already decided. Let’s just hope the studio doesn’t force Jonze’s hand to make it more “kiddie.” It’s supposed to be disturbing afterall.

Agora-Phobic Or Tastic?

It may not seem like there’s much to make of this trailer yet, but Alejandro Amenabar’s Agora could very well be the new epic you’ve been craving (though you’ll have to wait till December of 2009). The film takes place in Roman Egypt and follows a young slave, Davus (Max Minghella of Art School Confidential fame), who falls in love with his master, female professor and atheist Hypatia (Rachel Weisz). Swelling operatic themes in the background and larger than life shots signal that Agora could be the next big thing to take over theaters, or it could pull a 10,000 BC and fall completely flat. What do we think, yay or nay?

Pinto To Team Up With Allen

Rising Star Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) has already gotten her next big break. She recently stated that her next film will be with Woody Allen. It feels like Scarlett Johansson all over again. Supposedly Naomi Watts, Anthony Hopkins and Josh Brolin are also all aboard with Allen. So what will this new film be about? I’m thinking it will be about a marriage falling apart between Watts and Brolin, due to his affair with Pinto? And Hopkins can play the wise mentor that Watts turns to in her despair… thoughts?

Gondry Saves The Green Hornet

I’m sure you’ve already read this a million places before seeing it here, but did other blogs have this cool trippy picture? Michel Gondry has taken up the reigns of the The Green Hornet after Stephen Chow dropped out. The film written by Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg, has a release date of June 25, 2010, not to be confused with The Green Lantern, set to release in December 2010. I’m all for the incredible Gondry taking a stab at Hornet. His films are like beautiful mind trips that get stuck in your head and are constant replay.

And things can’t get any worse for the movie, right?

The First Coming Of Rupert Friend?

You’ve probably seen this guy in the small role of Wickham in Pride and Prejudice, or with his lips constantly wrapped around GF Keira Knightley. But soon, you’ll be seeing a lot more of this awkwardly feminine, yet appealing leading man. I didn’t make too much of Rupert Friend in the beginning, but with all his upcoming films, he’s growing on me. Check him out in this slightly disturbing clips from his film Cheri with Michelle Pfeiffer, and in the trailer for Young Victoria. Get ready America, this Brit is going to big, or at least he’s going to try.

Gigantic Looks Kind Of Familiar…

So the poster’s yellow, Paul Dano’s in it, and to top it off they use the same goddamn music from the Little Miss Sunshine trailer! I think Mr. Dano and Alan Arkin (see my take on Sunshine Cleaning) need to go to Sunshine rehab. Clearly they’re addicted. None the less Gigantic looks right up my indie ally, and Dano is looking better than ever as that love stoned guy who gets hotter with time and patience. And apparently having Zooey Deschanel and John Goodman in your movie is the new trendy thing to do, although this is the first time together that I’m aware of. The love story will either be cute or annoying. I could see it going either way. See the trailer here.

Is Monsters, Inc. Back In Business?

Ask and you shall receive seems to be Pixar’s new motto as news breaks that plans for the long awaited Monsters, Inc. sequel are supposedly in the works (thanks for the scoop First Showing!). Director Pete Docter who just finished UP, the upcoming release from Pixar, hasn’t officially confirmed this sequel news yet, but I’m guessing the rumors are true. Next to The Incredibles (which practically has sequel tattooed on its… arm), Monsters, Inc. is the most requested Pixar film. Rabid fans are dying to know, so tell us Docter, is it true?

Arrested Development Movie Will Happen… Or So They Say

Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz has confirmed that the movie will be developed… yeah I know, we’ve been hearing that for months. Can we get some shooting dates? How about a plot line? Oh wait… it hasn’t even been written yet. That’s right Arrested fans, if you were hoping to see a movie happen very soon, chances are you’ll be disappointed. But at least now we appear to have confirmation that a film will happen, sometime in the next 5 years if we’re lucky. But never fear, you have your DVD sets to keep you in stitches till then.
