If you thought Jason Bateman sniffing a cup of sperm in the poster for last year’s The Switch was distasteful, I’m dying to know what colourful adjectives you’d use to describe a scene in The Change-Up where the actor is showered in the mouth with baby poo. Keep in mind that this is the first joke of the movie, so don’t go wasting all your best [...]

According to the producers, 2009’s The Final Destination was supposed to be the final Final Destination movie, but as with most sentences beginning with “according to the producers”, that changed when the film went on to make buckets of money. In hindsight, a more apt title would have been Semi-final Destination, or in the likely event that even more sequels are made, they could [...]
In 2008, a certain Irish film proved that the f-word can, in fact, be used almost exclusively as an adjective with achingly funny results. It also proved, much to the dismay of Ralph Fiennes, that swans are not everybody’s f***ing thing. If you hadn’t guessed, that film was Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, and it was nothing short of a masterpiece of pitch-black comedy.
I remind you of [...]
Although the sword-and-sorcery subgenre has experienced something of a revival of late, there is a glaring lack of evidence — aside from HBO’s Game of Thrones — to suggest that this has been a good thing. Days would surely be sunnier had Clash of the Titans, Season of the Witch and Your Highness never existed, but exist they do, [...]
I don’t read comics. I might have flicked through The Adventures of Tintin once, but that’s about the extent of it. My ignorance, however, has never been much of a problem when it comes to reviewing comic-adapted movies, if only because a majority of them feature superheroes iconic enough that I haven’t needed to read a single issue to know who’s who or what’s what.
Then comes along Green Lantern, a [...]
“Apes will rise” stresses the film’s marketing campaign, presumably since a title like Rise of the Planet of the Apes is just too darn ambiguous in a post-Snakes on a Plane world to decipher. And rise the apes do — eventually. Because we can’t have apes rising all willy-nilly, now can we? They’ve got to be provoked. They’ve got to earn it. So, in order to get to the promised [...]
