My Friends, My Loves [Mes amis, mes amours] (Review)

The protagonist is confused about love. His kooky but good-hearted friends dish out uncertain advice to him, usually mirroring their own love-related issues. They smoke, have sex and enjoy the simple things in life. If this formula sounds familiar then you can likely guess what I’m getting at… these are the elements of a quintessential French film, centering on romance and kinship. My Friends, My Loves (Mes amis, mes amours) goes about the task in a comedic way [...]

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Review)

The slogan accompanying the Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs poster wittily promises you’ll “Laugh your ice off”.  Whilst the kids in the audience might  shed a few icicles, this 3D threequel contains too few laughs and too many clichés to defrost anyone else. If only Blue Sky studios were capable of writing a screenplay that matches the quality of their animation, which is particularly dazzling this time round thanks to the introduction of a more luscious jungle [...]

The Fox and the Child (Review)

After enduring the icy arctic climate to bring us March of the Penguins, French director Luc Jacquet decides to warm up the screen with the unlikely friendship of two fiery redheads; one an inquisitive fox, the other a cute freckled girl by the name of L’enfant (Bertille Noël-Bruneau). The inclusion of the latter sees this would-be animal documentary turn into something of a children’s fairytale. But in its hybrid state, The Fox and the Child falls shy of [...]

Fanboys (Review)

Of the various adjectives and nouns I would use to describe myself, without a doubt two of the largest looming in my mind would be, “cinephile”, and an as-yet unconfirmed word that encapsulates “obsessive and sad Star Wars fan”. Which is why, when so many people I know groaned upon viewing the trailer for Fanboys, I leapt for the moon and planets in my nerdish joy. While this fact may make me a somewhat unreliable reviewer in this [...]

The Last Airbender Teaser Trailer – Is Shyamalan back?

It might just be the teaser trailer, but this short snippet from the upcoming fantasy adaptation The Last Airbender has ‘awesome’ written all over it. It also took me by complete surprise.

Why? It stems from the fact that I’d long given up hope that M. Night Shyamalan could make a good film again. Who could blame me when I still have nightmares about how I actually paid to see The Happening?  Also, having never [...]

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Review)

Three minutes and ten seconds. That’s approximately how long it took director Michael Bay, the king of explosions, to blow something up in Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. Don’t go expecting the debris to settle for a second thereafter; once Bay’s canons have warmed up, he doesn’t stop firing.  Sure, this might make for some of the most explosive action ever to be captured on celluloid, or more accurately modelled on computer, but it doesn’t cease for 150 [...]
